Easy walk to Hayes Valley which is where we’d go most often. There’s a market across the street that is incredibly convenient but incredibly expensive. But location was convenient because it‘s close to MUNI, close to the freeway, Trader Joe’s, Costco, Target, etc. Rooftop and other outdoor areas are also pretty sweet, but it’s often cold and windy up there. We always said we weren’t sure if it’d be worth it on a lower floor. We were on floor 22 facing east and the view was honestly amazing, day after day, and made it feel worth the premium prices. The best NEMA perks are the gym (huge) and the view, if you’re on a higher floor.I also spent a couple years in lower pac heights and the mission (in small buildings with just a couple units). I’m not sure where your shuttle runs but I’d seriously consider living a stop farther out or a stop farther in, at least at first. If you’re more on the western or northern edge in like Hayes valley or Japantown those areas while not the safest parts of the city by a long shot are not nearly as sketchy. What is typically referred to as civic center and the eastern edge of it that borders the tenderloin and the southern edge that borders soma are areas that can feel decently safe during the day but are not at all safe at night. I also like being in such a convenient place for transportation and walking distance/ten minute bus ride from most jobs in the city.Īnd Civic center safety wise sorta depends what side of it you’re on. I also really like the industrial aesthetic and loft apartments and this is really only part of the city where you can get both. Being visibly queer it is also just nice to live somewhere that I’m left alone in part because there are a lot of much more visibly queer people here and also because there is just so much ridiculousness going on that suddenly somebody who looks or is dressed strange isn’t that big a deal. Much of the nightlife and cultural stuff I like about this city is centered here and I found that even when I was living in east bay that I was coming to soma constantly. This area is home to both the gay and leather district and the edge of the newly formed transgender district and there is still a large lgbt population here. I’d recommend moving somewhere else and feeling out the vibe before you move to soma (or civic center/tenderloin for that matter).Īs stated this area is the hotspot for techno/house and a certain brand of queer nightlife. I absolutely love it here and there is nowhere else in the city I’d want to live but I’d reconsider unless you have a really strong desire to be here. Right next to highway and bridge so you have to deal with a lot of noise. The nightlife here is largely centered around techno and queer/leather and after hours scene and just fairly limited normal and accessible happy hour and restaurants and brunch places and the like that many other places mentioned in this thread have. Many would consider the architecture a bit drab and industrial. Open air drug markets in places especially if you’re near sixth street corridor/civic center. High crime and at night depending on where you are things can feel really unsafe. It has less access to green space than almost any other place in the city.
